8 Signs Your Kidneys May Be Failing — Don’t Ignore Number 5

Your kidneys are silent heroes, filtering waste and toxins from your blood, regulating blood pressure, balancing fluids, and supporting red blood cell production.

When they start to fail, the early warning signs can be subtle, and many people overlook them until it’s too late. But your body does try to tell you when something’s not right. Here are 8 signs your kidneys might be in trouble:

1. Swelling in the feet, ankles, or hands – When kidneys can’t eliminate excess fluid, it builds up, causing puffiness, especially in the lower body.

2. Changes in urination – Frequent urination, especially at night, dark or foamy urine, or difficulty urinating can all indicate kidney problems.

3. Persistent fatigue – Damaged kidneys may not produce enough erythropoietin, a hormone that helps create red blood cells. This can lead to anemia and constant tiredness.

4. Skin dryness and itching – Kidney failure leads to a buildup of waste in the blood, which can cause itchy, dry skin.

5. Loss of appetite or nausea – Toxin buildup often leads to digestive issues, making food unappealing and causing nausea or vomiting.

6. Shortness of breath – Extra fluid can build up in the lungs, or anemia can reduce oxygen delivery, making it hard to breathe.

7. High blood pressure – Kidneys help regulate blood pressure. When they are failing, pressure often rises, creating a dangerous cycle.

8. Metallic taste in the mouth or bad breath – Waste in the bloodstream can change the taste of food and leave a foul odor in your mouth.

If you notice several of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. See a healthcare provider early. Your kidneys won’t shout—but they will whisper. Listen to your body before it’s too late.
