The length of time injectable PrEP remains effective in the body depends on the specific medication used. There are currently two main types of injectable PrEP: Apretude (cabotegravir) and Yeztugo (lenacapavir). Apretude offers protection for about two months per injection.
After the initial two doses given a month apart, it is then administered every eight weeks to maintain strong protection against HIV. Although its effectiveness lasts two months, small amounts of the drug can remain in the body for up to a year after the last dose.
This lingering presence is why it’s important to consult a doctor when stopping treatment, to avoid the risk of drug resistance if HIV is contracted during that time.
On the other hand, Yeztugo is a longer-acting injectable PrEP option, offering six months of protection from a single dose. It is given twice a year following a short oral lead-in phase.
Lenacapavir, the active ingredient, stays in the body for several months, ensuring lasting coverage. Both injectable forms provide long-term HIV protection with fewer doses compared to daily pills.
