As we age, our bodies become more vulnerable to illnesses. People over 60 are at higher risk for certain health conditions. Knowing these common sicknesses and taking preventive measures can help maintain a healthy and active life.

1. Heart Disease

Heart problems, including heart attacks and high blood pressure, are common after 60. To reduce the risk, maintain a healthy diet low in salt and saturated fats, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking. Regular check-ups are essential for early detection.

2. Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes often develops with age due to changes in metabolism. Eating balanced meals, controlling sugar intake, staying active, and monitoring blood sugar levels can prevent or manage diabetes effectively.

3. Arthritis

Joint pain and stiffness affect many older adults. Keeping a healthy weight, doing low-impact exercises like swimming or walking, and avoiding repetitive strain can reduce arthritis symptoms.

4. Osteoporosis

Bones become weaker with age, increasing the risk of fractures. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, strength training, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol help strengthen bones.

5. Respiratory Infections

Older adults are more prone to pneumonia and the flu. Vaccinations, good hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded places during outbreaks can lower the risk.

6. Cognitive Decline

Memory loss and dementia become more common with age. Staying mentally active through reading, puzzles, and social engagement supports brain health.

7. Vision and Hearing Problems

Conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and hearing loss are frequent. Regular eye and ear check-ups, protecting eyes from sunlight, and limiting loud noises help preserve senses.

Ageing does not mean accepting poor health. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits, attending regular medical check-ups, and staying active, older adults can prevent many common illnesses and enjoy life to the fullest.
