Your heart has an “age” too. It does not always match the number of years you have lived. Heart age reflects factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, smoking habits and physical activity. The good news is that many daily choices can help protect your heart and keep it working efficiently as you grow older.

1. Stay physically active

Regular movement strengthens the heart and improves blood circulation. Aim for activities such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or dancing. Even short periods of movement throughout the day can be useful.

2. Eat more heart-friendly foods

Fill your meals with vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts and healthy sources of protein. Reduce foods high in saturated fat, added sugar and excessive salt.

3. Keep your blood pressure under control

High blood pressure can put extra strain on the heart and blood vessels. Check your blood pressure regularly and follow medical advice if it is consistently high.

4. Avoid smoking

Smoking damages blood vessels and makes the heart work harder. Quitting can improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart disease.

5. Maintain a healthy weight

Carrying excess body weight can increase the chances of developing high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. A balanced diet and regular activity can help maintain a healthier weight.

6. Get enough quality sleep

Poor sleep can affect blood pressure, blood sugar and appetite. Most adults benefit from getting around seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

7. Manage stress

Constant stress may affect heart health through changes in blood pressure, sleep and lifestyle habits. Relaxing activities, social connections, exercise and taking regular breaks can help.

Keeping your heart young is not about finding one miracle food or exercise. It is about making small, healthy choices consistently.

Regular health checks are also important. Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar can help identify problems early.

A healthier heart can support an active life for many years. The sooner you begin caring for it, the more you can gain from those healthy habits.
