While it may not be a 100% instant exterminator, salt is non-toxic, safe for children and pets, and works best as part of a natural pest management routine.
For cockroaches, a mixture of salt and baking soda can be a game-changer. Combine equal parts and sprinkle the mix in corners, under the sink, behind the fridge, and along cockroach pathways.
The salt dehydrates them while the baking soda reacts with their digestive system, eventually killing them.
For rats, salt acts as a slow but sure poison. When consumed in large amounts, salt affects a rat’s internal system. Mix salt with strong-smelling food like peanut butter or meat scraps to lure them in. However, this works best when other food sources are limited.
For bedbugs, spraying saltwater especially sea salt dissolved in hot water on mattresses, bed frames, and cracks can dry out and irritate them. Repeat regularly for better results.
Though salt alone might not wipe out an infestation overnight, it’s a budget-friendly, natural aid to keeping pests under control.
