When someone contracts HIV, the virus begins to attack the immune system, particularly the CD4 cells (a type of white blood cell). However, this process can take a long time before causing any noticeable symptoms.

In the early stage, known as the acute phase, a person might feel flu-like symptoms, but many don’t notice anything at all. After that, the virus enters a clinical latency stage sometimes called the asymptomatic stage.

During this time, which can last 5 to 10 years or even more, the virus is still active but reproduces at very low levels. The person still feels perfectly healthy and may not suspect they have HIV unless they get tested.

Other factors that contribute to staying healthy for years include having a strong immune system, healthy lifestyle habits, and especially the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART).

ART keeps the virus under control, prevents progression to AIDS, and allows individuals to live long, healthy lives. This is why early testing and consistent treatment are so important even if you feel fine.
