With the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary now in the rear-view mirror all eyes in the political world have turned to South Carolina.

It will be the high noon showdown for the Republican Presidential nomination between former President Donald Trump and the last woman standing, former South Carolina Governor and U.S. UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Every pundit and political consultant who ever drew a breath are all offering their opinions and advice to Nikki Haley and what she should do.

There is one part of this chorus who says she should drop out and unite the party while at the same time preserving her future political viability in 2028 and beyond.

Others say, stay the course and hope you can catch lightning in a bottle and beat Trump in your home state and then momentum and more money will follow you into victories on Super Tuesday.

Still others say just keep running as long as the donor money lasts, win some delegates, and then go to the convention and try to force your way on to the ticket using those delegates as leverage.

None of these scenarios seems likely but that doesn’t stop the wizards and soothsayers of cable television from offering them.

All the consultant words and phrases like political viability, momentum and leverage are relics of a bygone era.

And for that matter so are the folks who spout this nonsense.

The politics of today are all media driven and it has become just another form of entertainment.

In 2016 Donald Trump figured that out better than anyone ever had and he was damn good at it.

And this idea of preserving one’s political viability for some future run is another relic of the political past.

Those who try to grab the brass ring in presidential politics have a short shelf-life, and there are no second acts.

Out of all the Republican candidates who ran for president in 2016 only two ran again in 2024.

Donald Trump and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Christie only did it to try to take down Trump. How did that work out for you Chris?

And that brings me to Nikki Haley.

To all those offering her their sage advice, I think they probably didn’t really listen to her speech in New Hampshire primary night.

They should save their breath and hold the advice.

In my opinion she made her choice in that speech. She burned her ships.

Let me explain:

In February 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and 500 soldiers sailed from Cuba and landed on the shores of Mexico.

His mission was to conquer the land for Spain, convert the natives to Catholicism for The Church and loot the place six ways to Sunday of its treasure.

As they prepared to head inland, Cortes wanted to make it clear to his men that they would either be successful in their mission or die in the process.

To make his point he burned his ships so that everyone knew there was no turning back.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Nikki Haley in her speech was tougher on Donald Trump than she had ever been.

She didn’t pull any punches and she let it be known that she was in it to win it however remote that possibility is.

If you don’t believe me, just watch the beginning of Trump’s speech that night as he laid into her with a special dose of venom.

Gone was the magnanimity that he employed on the night of his Iowa victory.

My guess is she knew she would get that reaction the minute she finished her speech.

If that wasn’t enough to let anyone know who is really paying attention to her true intentions, her Yankee carpetbagger friend Gov. Chris Sununu, R-N.H., was caught encouraging Democrats in the heart of Dixie to cross over and vote for her in South Carolina’s open primary.

And she is ratcheting up her harsh rhetoric against Trump daily using the kind of language that can never be taken back.

There will be no next time in 2028 no matter what the geniuses on TV and in newspaper columns tell her.

This is it. And she knows it.

So, she did the only thing she could do.

Like Cortes she took the big gamble.

She burned the ships that could carry her back to the safe harbor of a future in the Republican Party.

They are smoldering wrecks on the beaches of New Hampshire.

And unlike Cortes she will not be triumphant and have her name etched into history.

She will be but a footnote.
