The Lagos State House of Assembly in response to the continuous threats of kidnapping and insecurity nationwide has urged the National Assembly to consider a constitutional amendment enabling the establishment of state police forces.

During a plenary session chaired by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the Assembly outlined the urgent need for additional security measures.

Members called for the reinforcement of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, a vigilance group operated by the Lagos state government, to complement existing security agencies.

Addressing the Assembly, Speaker Obasa outlined the critical state of the nation’s security apparatus.

Stating, “This time around the National Assembly should be our focus. They don’t have to wait till the twilight of their tenure to start a constitutional amendment.”

Highlighting the proactive approach required, he urged immediate action, saying that the current administration is in its early stages and thus presents an opportune moment for legislative reform.

“The National Assembly should begin the amendment now, and we should be part of it to put an end to the issue of state police,” Obasa said.

Responding to concerns about potential misuse of state police powers by governors, the Speaker reassured stakeholders that appropriate checks and balances would be implemented to prevent abuse.

He outlined the importance of establishing robust legal frameworks to regulate the conduct of state police forces and safeguard against executive overreach.

Obasa’s statement reflect a general push for decentralization and increased autonomy in addressing security challenges at the state level.

With rising public capture about insecurity, particularly in the wake of continuous kidnapping incidents, the call for constitutional reform has gained momentum.
