The Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Abdur-Rasheed Akanbi, has urged for the adoption of capital punishment for corrupt leaders in Nigeria as a means to curb corruption effectively. Speaking to reporters at his palace in Iwo, Oba Akanbi emphasized the necessity of implementing stringent measures to combat the pervasive issue of corruption in the country, drawing parallels with countries like Saudi Arabia and China where capital punishment serves as a deterrent. Expressing concern over the paradoxical situation of Nigeria’s abundance of resources juxtaposed with widespread suffering due to corruption, the traditional ruler advocated for the fear of severe consequences to dissuade individuals from embezzling public funds.

Regarding economic challenges, Oba Akanbi criticized the failure of governors and lawmakers to utilize gains from subsidy removal for the benefit of the masses. He highlighted the disconnect between government revenues and the welfare of citizens, calling for transparency and accountability in resource allocation.

He said: “Money accruing to the Federal Government after the fuel subsidy removal is being shared by all tiers of governments in Nigeria.

“The questions now are: Why are people becoming poorer? Why are Nigerians still hungry?

The Oluwo urged federal authorities to scrutinize the utilization of resources by state governments, citing instances where substantial funds failed to translate into tangible improvements in living conditions.

Despite acknowledging temporary economic challenges, Oba Akanbi expressed confidence in the federal government’s efforts to address them. He emphasized the importance of implementing effective policies to stimulate economic growth and improve the well-being of Nigerians.
