State governors’ expressions of gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of their election, according to former Lagos State governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, indicate that they have a different understanding of the constitution and the workings of government than he does. Fashola claimed he did not thank Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the president at the time, when the Supreme Court upheld his election during his time as governor.
When informed that the state governors who expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for their Supreme Court triumph would be supporting the claim that our president possesses immense power?
“I think those Governors to whom you are referred should be in the best position to explain why they are thanking the president for a judgement given by an independent arm of government, a judiciary,” he said in an interview with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie on Untold Stories. When I was governor, I filed election petitions, and they were granted. I did not express gratitude to President Umaru Yar’Adua for that decision.
Indeed, expressing gratitude to the Supreme Court may be considered stating the obvious. To do justice as they see and comprehend it is their responsibility.
It therefore seems to me to indicate that they have a different understanding of the workings of the constitution and government than I do, which is why I interpret the situation differently.
