If Your Headache Is from Hypertension: Doctor’s Tips to Prevent Hypertension-Related Headaches

Headaches are a frequent complaint, often linked to stress, too much screen time or lack of sleep. But sometimes, they can point to something much more serious such as high blood pressure. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), hypertension affects almost one-third of adult Indians and the alarming part is that many do not even know they have it until they develop complications.

One of the first and most neglected indicators of undetected hypertension is a persistent headache. Knowing the distinction between a simple headache and a life-threatening one can help prevent life-threatening consequences.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Abhishek Singh, Consultant – Cardiology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad listed the signs to know hypertension-induced headache and also listed tips to manage it.

Understanding Hypertension

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition where the pressure of blood against your artery walls is always too high. It is usually symptom-free in the early stages but slowly destroys vital organs over time, including the heart, kidneys, and brain. A reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is high. If not treated, it can cause stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and even dementia.

When A Headache Could Be More Than Tension

  • Dull, throbbing headache that commonly occurs at the base of the head or in the neck
  • Morning headaches that subside later in the day
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds with accompanying headache
  • Breathlessness or chest pain
  • Light-headedness or a sensation of pressure within the head

Tips For Controlling Or Avoiding Hypertension-Induced Headaches

Check Blood Pressure Periodically- Buy a home blood pressure device and record your readings, particularly if you are older than 35 are overweight or have a history of hypertension in your family. Catching the problem early makes all the difference.

Eat A Low-Sodium, Heart-Healthy Diet- Too much salt raises blood pressure. Opt for fresh, whole foods such as leafy greens, fruits, whole grains and nuts. Steer clear of processed snacks, instant foods and pickles that contain a lot of hidden salt.

Exercise Regularly- A minimum of 30 minutes of walking, cycling, swimming, or even yoga five times a week can greatly lower your blood pressure. Physical exercise also boosts mood and lowers stress.

Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol- Keep caffeine consumption to moderate levels and limit alcohol to the “occasional” use. Both raise blood pressure and aggravate headaches if overused.

Optimise Stress Management- Stress is the number one cause of high blood pressure. Inhale deeply, meditate, write down experiences and engage in leisure activities to release day-to-day tension and avoid BP peaks.

Avoid Self-Medication With Painkillers- Regular use of over-the-counter pain medication for headaches can cause rebound headaches and cover up serious illness. Always consult a doctor for ongoing or unexplained pain.
