If Your Phone Falls in Water, Don’t Dry It in the Sun — Follow These 4 Safe Steps Instead
If your mobile phone accidentally falls into water, your first instinct might be to dry it in the sun but that’s not a good idea. Exposing it to direct heat can damage its internal components, warp the battery, or cause moisture to evaporate unevenly, potentially leaving corrosion behind. 1. Turn it off immediately. Even if it looks like it’s still working, powering it down prevents short-circuiting. Do not press any buttons or try to check messages — this can force water deeper into the device.
2. Remove external parts. Take out the SIM card, memory card, and battery (if possible). Gently shake the phone to remove excess water, but avoid vigorous shaking.
3. Dry it carefully. Use a clean, dry cloth to pat the phone dry. Avoid using a hairdryer or microwave this can cause more harm. Place the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice or silica gel packets to absorb moisture. Leave it there for at least 24–48 hours.
4. Test it. After ensuring it’s completely dry, reinsert the battery and turn it on. If it doesn’t respond, seek professional repair help instead of forcing it.
Patience and proper care make all the difference when saving a water-damaged phone.
