I really don’t. I don’t know Gaza, don’t know the minds of its inhabitants, don’t know how feasible it is to find and dismantle Hamas’s terrorist network there, and don’t know enough about military tactics to have a useful opinion about ceasefires or pauses.

I do, however, know something about the ebb and flow of popular judgment. So let me imagine myself the director of
