Although it may seem like a good idea to stay hydrated overnight, drinking a lot of water just before sleeping can lead to frequent urination during the night (a condition known as nocturia).
This disrupts your sleep cycle and prevents your body from getting deep, restful sleep. Poor sleep quality can negatively affect your mood, concentration, immune system, and even heart health over time.
Additionally, people with kidney issues or heart conditions may unintentionally burden their system by consuming large amounts of fluid late at night. The body’s natural processing and elimination systems slow down during sleep, so excess fluids can contribute to swelling (edema) or put strain on the heart.
Moreover, in colder climates, drinking cold water at night may slightly drop your core body temperature, affecting sleep and metabolism.
To stay healthy, it’s best to hydrate regularly throughout the day and limit water intake 1–2 hours before.
