4 Substances You Should Stop Taking Excessively to Lower Your Diabetes Risk

Type 2 diabetes remains one of the leading causes of death globally, with health authorities reporting a steady rise in new diagnoses each year. Medical professionals continue to emphasize that while genetics can play a role, a large proportion of cases are influenced by lifestyle choices that are preventable or manageable. In a recent opinion commentary by Marietjie, attention was drawn to four major areas of excessive intake and behavior that may increase the risk of developing diabetes and its associated complications.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body either does not produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to insulin function. This leads to elevated blood glucose levels over time. If not properly controlled, the condition can result in serious health consequences including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, vision impairment, and other long-term complications.

One of the key factors highlighted is the excessive consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Regular intake of soft drinks, energy drinks, confectioneries, and other high-sugar snacks can cause repeated spikes in blood sugar levels. Over time, this pattern may contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance, both of which are closely linked to Type 2 diabetes. Health authorities commonly advise reducing added sugars and prioritizing alternatives such as water, unsweetened beverages, and natural whole fruits.

Another concern is excessive alcohol consumption. Heavy drinking can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar and may also contribute to weight gain and pancreatic damage. Many alcoholic products also contain significant amounts of sugar. While moderate intake is sometimes considered acceptable for certain individuals, higher consumption levels are associated with increased diabetes risk.

The overconsumption of refined carbohydrates is also identified as a contributing factor. Foods such as white bread, pastries, white rice, and other processed grains are rapidly broken down into glucose, leading to quick rises in blood sugar. Regular intake of these foods may increase insulin demand and contribute to long-term insulin resistance. Health recommendations often encourage replacing refined grains with whole grains, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods.

In addition to dietary factors, physical inactivity is highlighted as a significant risk element. A sedentary lifestyle can reduce insulin sensitivity and contribute to weight gain. Health guidelines commonly recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly, such as brisk walking, to support metabolic health and reduce diabetes risk.

Early symptoms of diabetes may include frequent urination, excessive thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, and tingling sensations in the extremities. Because the condition can develop gradually, regular medical screening is often encouraged for early detection.

Medical experts note that diabetes prevention is most effective when approached through overall lifestyle management, including balanced nutrition, regular exercise, weight control, and reduced exposure to known risk factors.
