The Surprising Truth About Drinking Water Around Mealtimes

Many people wonder whether it’s healthy to drink water immediately before or after meals. You’ve probably heard different opinions some say it’s good for digestion, while others warn it can interfere with your stomach’s natural process. So, what’s the real deal?

Drinking water before a meal can actually be beneficial. Taking a glass of water about 30 minutes before eating helps prepare your stomach for digestion.

It hydrates your body, jumpstarts your digestive juices, and can even help prevent overeating by giving you a sense of fullness.

Now, what about drinking water during or right after meals? Contrary to some myths, sipping small amounts of water while eating isn’t harmful it helps break down food, makes swallowing easier, and assists in nutrient absorption.

However, drinking large amounts of water immediately after eating might dilute digestive enzymes and slow down digestion slightly, especially if the water is cold.

The key is moderation. Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and if you want to drink near mealtime, small sips are fine. Just avoid chugging large amounts right after meals.

That way, you support digestion instead of disrupting it. Listen to your body it knows what feels right.
