Those little bumps that sometimes appear on your skin especially on your upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks are more common than you might think. They often feel rough, almost like sandpaper, and may not itch or hurt, but they can be frustrating if you’re concerned about smooth, clear skin.
These bumps are usually caused by a harmless skin condition called keratosis pilaris.
Keratosis pilaris happens when keratin, a protein that protects the skin, builds up and blocks the openings of hair follicles. This causes tiny, raised bumps that can be flesh-colored, red, or slightly white-tipped.
Though it’s not dangerous or contagious, it can affect your confidence, especially when wearing sleeveless clothes or shorts.
To take care of it, regular gentle exfoliation is key using a soft scrub or a chemical exfoliant with lactic acid or salicylic acid helps remove the dead skin cells clogging the pores.
Follow this with a moisturizing lotion, ideally one containing urea or alpha hydroxy acids to soften the skin. Avoid overly hot showers, harsh soaps, and scrubbing too hard, as these can make it worse.
While there’s no permanent cure, with consistent care, the appearance of these bumps can be greatly reduced, leaving your skin smoother and healthier-looking.
