5 Healthy Processed Foods to Eat Every Week for Better Blood Pressure

“Processed foods” has become something of a dirty word, but it covers a huge range of foods. Technically, a food is processed any time it’s changed from its natural state, like chopping, canning, freezing, fermenting or cooking. That means bagged spinach, plain yogurt and canned beans all technically count as processed, right alongside less nutritious options. What often gets people into trouble are ultra-processed foods, or UPFs. These are industrially made products loaded with additives, added sugars, refined oils and sodium. Soda, packaged snack cakes and many frozen meals fall into this camp, and diets heavy in them are linked to higher blood pressure and heart disease.....Read Full Details Here>>>

Contrary to what some influencers will tell you, not all processed foods work against your health, especially if you have high blood pressure. Some are actually convenient, budget-friendly tools that can help manage your heart health, especially if you eat it along with an overall balanced and healthy diet. The trick is knowing which ones to reach for. We asked dietitians to share their top processed foods they say are worth adding to your weekly rotation if you have high blood pressure, and here they are.

1. Tofu

Made from condensed soy milk, tofu is a minimally processed plant protein that deserves a spot in your fridge. “Tofu is a great option to include in your rotation to support your blood pressure. Each block is packed with plant-based proteins and unsaturated fats, which have shown positive effects on heart health,” per Patricia Kolesa M.S., RDN.

Beyond that, tofu is naturally low in sodium and contains soy isoflavones, plant compounds that some research links to modestly improved blood vessel function. Swapping in plant proteins like soy for some of the saturated fat found in fatty meats may also support healthier cholesterol levels, which matters for your overall cardiovascular picture. Just keep in mind the proposed heart-health benefits people may reap when making this swap stem from choosing plant-based protein sources that are not considered to be ultra-processed, like a deep fried tofu-based “chick’n” nugget.

To enjoy it, press and cube firm tofu and roast or air-fry it until crisp, then toss it into grain bowls or stir-fries. Blend silken tofu into smoothies or creamy sauces for a protein boost without the salt. Just go easy on high-sodium marinades and sauces so you don’t undo the benefit.

2. No-Salt-Added Canned Tomatoes

Canned tomatoes are a pantry staple for many, and the no-salt-added versions are especially friendly for your blood pressure, because it provides key nutrients and compounds that support healthy blood pressure. “The potassium helps the kidneys excrete excess sodium and counteracts its blood-pressure-raising effects,” per Whitney Stuart M.S., RDN. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, which is a plant compound that gives them their red hue and may also support healthy blood pressure.

Interestingly, canned tomatoes can offer even more lycopene than fresh, because the heat used in canning makes this antioxidant easier for the body to absorb. Choosing the no-salt-added option lets you control exactly how much sodium ends up in your meal, which is a real advantage when regular canned tomatoes can pack several hundred milligrams per serving.

Use them as the base for soups, chili and pasta sauces, or simmer them with garlic and herbs for a quick shakshuka. Season with dried spices, citrus or a splash of vinegar instead of salt to keep flavor high and sodium low.

3. Low-Fat Greek Yogurt

Creamy, tangy and versatile, low-fat strained (Greek-style) yogurt brings a lot to the table. “Low-fat greek yogurt is a good source of several heart-friendly nutrients, like calcium, magnesium and potassium. It also provides adequate protein, and can help displace higher sodium snack options,” per Sarah Schlichter M.A., RDN.

Those three minerals (calcium, magnesium and potassium) are central to the well-studied Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating pattern, which is specifically designed to help lower blood pressure. Yogurt is also a fermented food, and some research suggests regular yogurt intake may be associated with slightly lower blood pressure over time, though it’s not a cure-all. The protein and probiotics are nice bonuses for keeping you full and supporting gut health.

The key is watching added sugars in flavored varieties. “Opt for plain greek yogurt and flavor with fruit or a little bit of honey or cinnamon, or a lower-sugar version to limit added sugars,” per Schlichter. Try it as a base for breakfast bowls, a swap for sour cream or a quick snack topped with berries.

4. Whole Grain Bread

Bread often gets a bad rap, but the whole grain version can genuinely support your heart. Schlichter explains that whole grain bread is a source of magnesium and fiber, which have both been shown to play roles in managing and improving blood pressure, along with supporting overall heart health.

When shopping, look for “100% whole wheat” or “100% whole grain” as the first ingredient, and check that a slice offers at least a few grams of fiber. Use it for veggie-packed sandwiches, whole grain toast with avocado or a side to your favorite soup.

5. Canned Beans

Few foods are as convenient or as good for you as a can of beans. “Canned beans have many varieties, so you can create different meals every week. They provide fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. In particular, the potassium they contain helps to counter the effects of sodium, while fiber is beneficial for overall heart health,” per Mascha Davis M.P.H., RDN.

Beans are also a leading source of plant-based protein and soluble fiber, which can help support healthy blood sugar and cholesterol. Because they’re so filling and affordable, they make an easy stand-in for higher-sodium processed proteins like deli meats. To trim sodium further, choose no-salt-added cans or drain and rinse regular beans, which can wash away a meaningful amount of the sodium.

Stir them into salads, blend them into dips like hummus, fold them into tacos or simmer them into hearty soups and stews.

Selecting Processed Foods for Better Blood Pressure

Not every processed food belongs in your cart. Use these strategies to find the ones that support your goals:

Read the Label: Scan the Nutrition Facts panel for sodium first, aiming for lower numbers per serving, and check the ingredient list for added sugars and long lists of additives.

Look for “No-Salt-Added” or “Low-Sodium”: These callouts make it easier to control how much sodium ends up on your plate.

Prioritize Potassium, Fiber and Minerals: Foods offering potassium, magnesium, calcium and fiber tend to align with blood-pressure-friendly eating patterns.

Watch Added Sugars: Flavored yogurts, sauces, canned fruits and breads can hide sugar, so compare brands and pick lower-sugar options when you can.

Our Expert Take

Processed doesn’t automatically mean unhealthy. While ultra-processed foods are worth limiting, plenty of everyday processed staples, like tofu, no-salt-added canned tomatoes, low-fat Greek yogurt, whole grain bread and canned beans, may genuinely support healthier blood pressure while saving you time and money.

None of these foods work in isolation. They fit best within an overall balanced eating pattern, paired with regular movement and any care plan your doctor recommends. If you have high blood pressure, stock your kitchen with a few of these options each week, read labels with a critical eye and talk with your health care provider about the approach that’s right for you.
