Early HIV Signs That Commonly Appear on the Mouth and Skin

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a condition that weakens the body’s immune system, making it harder to fight off infections and diseases.

One of the easiest ways to notice early signs of HIV is by paying attention to changes in the mouth and skin.

These areas often give warning signals that something is not right in the body.

Sadly, many people ignore them, thinking they are just minor issues, until the infection has progressed.

Here are some of the common signs experts say may appear.

1. Persistent Skin Rashes:

Skin problems are common in people living with HIV.

You may notice red, itchy, or flaky rashes on the face, chest, or other parts of the body.

Sometimes, the skin may develop dark spots or sores that don’t heal quickly.

These rashes happen because HIV weakens immunity, making the skin more sensitive to infections.

2. Mouth Sores and Ulcers:

Painful sores inside the mouth, gums, or lips are among the early warning signs.

They may appear frequently and take longer than usual to heal.

These sores can make eating and drinking uncomfortable.

3. Oral Thrush (Fungal Infections):

HIV patients often develop a white coating on the tongue or inner cheeks, known as thrush.

This happens when the body cannot control fungal growth due to a weakened immune system.

It may cause pain, burning, or difficulty swallowing.

4. Unexplained Dark Patches on Skin:

Some people may develop unusual dark or purplish spots on the skin, which could be linked to Kaposi’s sarcoma, a type of cancer associated with advanced HIV.

5. Cracked Corners of the Mouth:

Another subtle sign is frequent cracking or dryness at the edges of the lips, often caused by fungal or bacterial infections thriving in a weakened immune system.

Final Thoughts

Not everyone with these symptoms has HIV, but if these signs appear frequently and without clear reasons, it’s important to get tested.

Early diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral drugs allow people with HIV to live long and healthy lives.

The key is not to ignore what your mouth and skin might be telling you.
