On the journey toward marriage and finding a life partner, people often overlook potential problems during the dating phase. Issues that appear minor at first can evolve into serious and harmful patterns once married. Love should not mean ignoring clear warning signs. There is no reason to tolerate toxic or damaging behaviors simply to reach the goal of marriage.

Everyone faces personal struggles and makes mistakes they later regret. All people need grace and freedom that comes through faith in Christ. However, recognizing red flags early in dating relationships leads to healthier marriages. God cares about the decisions people make, including the choice of a spouse. There is confidence that divine guidance can help identify important warning signs along the way.

1. The Unbeliever

It is important not to settle for less than what aligns with spiritual well-being in marriage. Combining marriage with significantly different spiritual beliefs can create major difficulties when everyday challenges arise. It is unwise to assume that a partner will later change or adopt the same faith if core beliefs are currently very different. This change may or may not occur.

2 Cor. 6:14

2. The Abuser

Although abuse is often associated with men, women can also exhibit abusive behavior. Men in such situations may find it difficult to speak about the problem or seek help, often experiencing deep feelings of shame, guilt, and inadequacy as hidden victims of relationship abuse.

Ps. 11:5

This verse highlights God’s view of a violent heart. No one should ever be mistreated. If a partner causes physical, verbal, or severe emotional harm, it is essential to leave the relationship immediately. One person cannot save or fix another in this way. Abuse in any form has no place in marriage, which requires a foundation of deep love and respect.

3. The Controller or Manipulator

The subtle actions of a controlling or manipulative person can signal serious future problems. What may initially seem like care and concern can actually reflect a strong need for control or jealousy. Such a person might attempt to direct major decisions, limit who their partner spends time with, constantly check up on them, monitor their activities closely, or falsely accuse them of cheating. They frequently express doubts about trust. Living under this kind of control can feel suffocating and oppressive.

James 3:16

4. The Angry, Contentious Woman

If a partner cannot manage her anger before marriage, she is unlikely to control it afterward. In many cases, the behavior tends to worsen over time. Regardless of personality type, it is not acceptable to treat others with harsh words, rants, or destructive outbursts. It is wise to carefully observe how she handles various situations, particularly stressful ones.

Proverbs 25:24

5. The Seducer

Certain behavioral patterns established before marriage, especially related to sexual sin, do not automatically disappear after the wedding. Such habits can be difficult to break once formed and represent a serious trap. Past mistakes or pain should not control the present or future. The goal is renewal and freedom through higher standards. Couples should commit together to maintain the relationship according to those standards. While some claim that premarital sex is normal and harmless, it carries significant weight. Healthy love seeks to protect, strengthen, and encourage safe patterns.

6. The Deceiver or Liar

Trust forms the essential foundation of any marriage. Without it, the relationship is headed for trouble. Small lies noticed during dating are warning signs. There are no harmless “white lies”—every lie aims to hide, mislead, or distort truth. Lying has no role in a strong and loving partnership. It creates a dangerous situation where the full truth remains unknown.

7. The Addict

Addiction to alcohol, drugs, pornography, or other behaviors creates deep and lasting problems. True freedom requires acknowledging the issue, seeking professional help, and relying on God’s power. It is unrealistic to expect that love alone will lead someone to easily overcome addiction without proper support and accountability. Changing hearts in this way is not one person’s responsibility.

1 Cor. 6:12

By paying attention to these characteristics during dating, individuals can make wiser choices that support a healthier and longer life together.
