Bad breath can be embarrassing, especially when you are talking closely with friends, colleagues, or loved ones. The good news is that there are simple habits you can follow every day to keep your mouth clean and your breath fresh.

It is normal for your breath to smell unpleasant when you wake up in the morning. While you sleep, saliva production decreases, leaving your mouth drier and allowing bacteria to build up. Certain foods, including onions, garlic, and some spicy foods, can also cause temporary bad breath.

Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly are some of the most important steps you can take to control bad breath. Chewing sugar-free gum or a sugar-free mint can also stimulate saliva production and help freshen your breath.

How Can You Tell If You Have Bad Breath?

Many people do not realize that they have bad breath because it is difficult to notice your own breath.

One simple method is to floss between your teeth and smell the floss afterward. Another method is to lick the inside of your wrist, allow it to dry briefly, and smell the area. However, these methods are not as reliable as having a dentist assess your mouth.

A persistent unpleasant smell may be a sign that something needs attention, especially if regular brushing and flossing do not improve it.

Don’t Forget to Clean Your Tongue

A significant amount of bacteria can accumulate on the tongue, particularly toward the back. Therefore, cleaning your tongue should be part of your daily oral-care routine.

You can gently clean your tongue with a tongue scraper or your toothbrush. Tongue scrapers are available in both plastic and metal varieties and can help remove buildup from the surface of the tongue.

Eat Foods That Encourage Saliva Production

Crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples, celery, and carrots can help stimulate saliva when you chew them. Saliva naturally helps wash away food particles and bacteria from the mouth.

However, these foods should not replace regular brushing and flossing. They should simply be part of a healthy diet and good oral-care routine.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking enough water helps prevent dry mouth and keeps your mouth moist. Since dry mouth can contribute to bad breath, staying hydrated can be helpful.

Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can sometimes contribute to dry mouth, while sugary or acidic soft drinks can increase the risk of tooth decay and enamel erosion. Water is generally the best choice for keeping your mouth hydrated.

Choose Your Mouthwash Carefully

Mouthwash can be an additional part of your oral-care routine. If you experience dry mouth, consider choosing an alcohol-free mouthwash, as alcohol-containing products may worsen dryness for some people.

Remember that mouthwash should not replace brushing and flossing.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can cause persistent bad breath and can negatively affect your oral health. It can also contribute to dry mouth and increase the risk of gum disease and other dental problems.

If you smoke, quitting can improve both your oral health and your overall health.

Bad Breath Can Sometimes Signal Another Problem

Bad breath is not always caused by poor oral hygiene. Tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, dry mouth, sinus problems, and certain medical conditions can sometimes contribute to persistent bad breath.

Some medications can also cause dry mouth, which may lead to unpleasant breath. If you take medication regularly and notice persistent dry mouth or bad breath, speak with your doctor or dentist rather than stopping the medication on your own.

What About Lemon Water?

Some people use lemon water to freshen their breath because of its refreshing taste. However, regularly exposing your teeth to acidic lemon juice can contribute to enamel erosion.

For everyday hydration, plain water is a safer choice for your teeth. If you use lemon in water, avoid swishing it around your mouth and consider rinsing with plain water afterward.

When Should You See a Dentist?

If your bad breath continues despite brushing, flossing, cleaning your tongue, and staying hydrated, it is a good idea to visit a dentist.

Persistent bad breath may be linked to cavities, gum disease, infections, dry mouth, or another underlying problem that needs treatment.

Bad breath can happen to anyone, and there is no need to feel ashamed about it. If you notice that someone you care about has persistent bad breath, having a respectful and private conversation with them may help them address the problem.

With good oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, adequate hydration, and healthy lifestyle habits, you can take important steps toward keeping your breath fresh every day.
