Surprising Diseases That Can Be Passed Through Kissing

Kissing, a natural and intimate expression of affection, can also be a way for certain diseases to spread. While the act itself is generally safe, there are several illnesses that can be transmitted through saliva or skin-to-skin contact during a kiss. Knowing what these are can help reduce the risk and ensure you stay healthy.

One of the most common diseases spread through kissing is cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). These painful blisters can be passed on even when there are no visible symptoms, as the virus can be contagious at all stages.

Another disease that can be spread is mononucleosis, often called “mono” or the “kissing disease.” Caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), mono is known for symptoms like fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. It is typically spread through saliva, making kissing a primary mode of transmission.

Cavities and gum disease can also be spread through kissing. Bacteria from one person’s mouth, particularly those that cause tooth decay or gingivitis, can be transmitted when kissing. This is why it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly.

Other viral infections like cytomegalovirus (CMV), hepatitis B, and even flu can be passed through saliva. Though the risk of transmission varies, it’s important to be mindful of your health and avoid kissing if you or your partner are feeling unwell or have any visible symptoms of illness.

Practicing good hygiene, maintaining a strong immune system, and avoiding kissing during an active outbreak of any illness can help reduce the risk of transmission.
