There are many Christians who do not realize that they may be allowing certain things to take the place that belongs to God in their lives. These idols may not look like statues or physical images, but they can still become objects of excessive love, attention, dependence, or devotion.
Idolatry is not only about bowing down to a carved image. Anything that takes priority over God or competes with Him for our hearts can become an idol. When something begins to control our time, attention, decisions, or desires more than God does, we need to examine ourselves carefully.
As Christians, we are called to put God first and avoid allowing anything to become more important to us than our relationship with Him. To do this, we must recognize the things that can quietly become idols in our everyday lives.
Here are some common examples:

1. Your Phone
Mobile phones have become an important part of our daily lives. They help us communicate, work, learn, entertain ourselves, and stay connected with others. However, something that is useful can become an idol when we become excessively dependent on it.
For some people, the phone receives more attention than God. They may spend hours scrolling through social media, watching videos, chatting, or browsing the internet, yet struggle to spend even a few minutes praying or studying the Bible.
Some people even use their phones during church services, prayer meetings, or Bible study when they should be focused on worship. Others reach for their phones immediately after waking up or spend the last moments of their day looking at their screens instead of praying or reflecting on God’s Word.
The problem is not the phone itself. The problem begins when the phone controls our attention and takes time and devotion that should be given to God.
We should therefore examine ourselves honestly. How much time do we give to our phones compared with the time we give to God? If we cannot put our phones aside for God, then we may need to reconsider the place they have taken in our lives.
This message is for all of us. We should not allow technology to become an idol.
2. Our Work and Daily Activities
Work is important, and the Bible encourages us to be diligent and responsible. Having a job, running a business, or pursuing a career is not wrong. In fact, our work can be one of the ways through which we provide for ourselves, help others, and bring glory to God.
However, work can become an idol when it takes God’s place in our lives.
Some people are so focused on making money, building their businesses, advancing their careers, or achieving personal success that they have little or no time for God. They may always find time for work, meetings, business opportunities, and other responsibilities but continually make excuses when it comes to prayer, church attendance, Bible study, or serving God.
We should never become so busy pursuing earthly success that we neglect the One who gave us the strength and opportunity to work in the first place.
God has entrusted each of us with responsibilities and gifts that can be used for His glory. Therefore, we should strive to remain active in the work of the Lord while also fulfilling our responsibilities in our families, workplaces, and communities.
The goal is not to abandon our work. Rather, we must make sure that our work does not become more important to us than God.
We need to ask ourselves: Has my work become so important that I no longer have time for God?
If the answer is yes, it may be time to reconsider our priorities and put God back in His rightful place.
