There is only one country in the world that has the Bible on its national flag — the Dominican Republic. This small Caribbean nation stands out for proudly displaying a symbol of faith at the very heart of its flag. The open Bible represents the country’s deep Christian roots and its belief in God as a guiding force for the nation.
The flag of the Dominican Republic features a white cross dividing it into four rectangles — two blue and two red. At the centre of the cross sits the national coat of arms, which includes a shield, a cross, and an open Bible. The blue colour stands for liberty, the red represents the blood of the heroes, and the white symbolises salvation and peace.
What makes the flag truly unique is that the Bible in the coat of arms is open to a specific verse: John 8:32, which says, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” This verse highlights the importance of truth and faith in the country’s history and daily life.
The Dominican Republic’s decision to include the Bible was not accidental. It reflects the nation’s strong Christian heritage and the influence of religion in its founding. The founders wanted the flag to show that the nation’s freedom and strength come from God.
Today, the flag continues to inspire pride among Dominicans. It reminds them of their faith, unity, and independence. In a world where most countries separate religion from national symbols, the Dominican Republic remains a special example of how faith and patriotism can blend together. Its flag stands as a bold declaration that truth and freedom are deeply rooted in the word of God.
