The letters INRI often seen at the top of Jesus’ cross stand for a Latin phrase: “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum,” which translates to “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” This inscription was placed there by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate during the crucifixion, as recorded in the New Testament (John 19:19-20).
It was meant to declare the official charge against Jesus—that He claimed to be the King of the Jews, a statement that was politically provocative to the Roman authorities and offensive to the Jewish leaders who did not accept His kingship.
Interestingly, the sign was written in three languages: Hebrew (the language of the Jewish people), Latin (the language of the Roman government), and Greek (the common language of the region), making sure everyone could read it.
Pilate refused to change the wording even when Jewish leaders protested, saying he should have written that Jesus “claimed” to be king. But Pilate famously responded, “What I have written, I have written.”
Today, INRI is more than just historical it carries deep spiritual meaning for Christians.
It reminds believers of Jesus’ identity, His sacrifice, and the fulfillment of the prophecy that the Messiah would be a suffering Kingnnot of worldly power, but of divine love and redemption.
