The World’s Biggest Country Without a River Has a Surprising Water Source

The largest country in the world without a river is Saudi Arabia. Despite its vast size and arid desert landscape, the country has no permanent rivers. This might seem surprising given how essential rivers are for human survival, agriculture, and industry. However, Saudi Arabia has developed alternative methods to meet its water needs.

One major source of water in Saudi Arabia is desalination. The country is a global leader in desalinating seawater, turning the salty waters of the Persian Gulf and Red Sea into fresh, drinkable water.

There are over 30 desalination plants across the kingdom, supplying water for both domestic use and agriculture. This process, though energy-intensive and costly, is a critical solution for Saudi Arabia’s water scarcity.

Another method used is groundwater extraction. There are deep underground reservoirs of ancient water called “fossil water” that the country taps into through wells. However, this source is non-renewable and depleting over time.

Saudi Arabia has also invested in water recycling and conservation technologies. Treated wastewater is used for irrigation and industrial purposes, while public campaigns encourage citizens to use water responsibly.

In short, even without rivers, Saudi Arabia has built a sophisticated water infrastructure that supports its population and growing cities.
