Alcohol consumption varies widely across Africa, with some countries recording much higher levels of drinking than others. Factors such as culture, availability, income, and drinking patterns can all influence alcohol consumption.
Here are five African countries often ranked among those with high alcohol consumption per capita:

1. Seychelles

Seychelles has consistently recorded high levels of alcohol consumption compared with many other African countries. Alcohol is widely available, and tourism also contributes to consumption patterns.

2. Uganda

Uganda has one of the higher alcohol-consumption levels on the continent. Both commercial alcoholic drinks and locally produced beverages contribute to overall consumption.

3. South Africa

South Africa has a large alcohol market, with beer, wine and spirits being widely consumed. The country also has significant concerns around harmful drinking and alcohol-related health and social problems.

4. Namibia

Namibia is another southern African country that records relatively high alcohol consumption. Beer and other alcoholic beverages are commonly available across the country.

5. Botswana

Botswana has also reported relatively high levels of alcohol consumption. The government has introduced various measures over the years aimed at reducing harmful drinking.

Important Note

Rankings can change depending on the year, data source and whether the figures measure recorded alcohol sales, total consumption, or consumption per adult. Unrecorded alcohol can also affect estimates.

High alcohol consumption does not mean that everyone in a country drinks heavily. However, frequent or excessive alcohol use can increase the risk of several health problems, including liver disease, certain cancers, cardiovascular problems, injuries and alcohol dependence.
