These Popular Foods May Be More Dangerous Than You Think

According to reports from the World Health Organization, several plant species create meals that include naturally occurring toxins as a sort of self-defense against being consumed by animals (WHO). Acute poisoning is one of the many adverse health effects that can be caused by naturally occurring poisons, but regardless of whether or not they affect cattle or people, they still constitute a significant threat to the health of both species.

Acute poisoning can cause a variety of symptoms, including an allergic reaction, severe stomach discomfort and diarrhea, and even death in extreme cases. The immune system, reproductive system, and brain are all susceptible to damage over the long run as a result of the repercussions. Therefore, although the plants themselves do not appear to be affected by these naturally occurring toxins, other creatures, such as people, possibly could be.

Because they contain naturally occurring toxins, many of the foods that we eat on a regular basis represent a danger to our wellbeing and should be avoided at all costs. A list of foods that are naturally harmful or poisonous has been developed by WebMD and is presented in this article.

Some of the Most Important Facts Regarding Apple Seeds

Many individuals have the misconception that if they consume one apple every day, it will keep them healthy and assist them in warding off illness.

1. Apples have a remarkable high nutritional value for a fruit; however, eating apple seeds is not a good idea because they contain cyanide, which is a potent poison that, in high enough concentrations, can cause rapid breathing, convulsions, and even death. Apple seeds have a chemical layer that prevents them from absorbing cyanide, making it perfectly safe to consume them, even if you do so unintentionally.

2. Nutmeg comes in second.

Nutmeg is a fantastic spice that can be used to impart a lovely nutty flavor to a wide variety of baked items. WebMD warns against overuse since it carries the potential for adverse effects. Myristicin, which can be found in the oil, has been linked to a broad variety of adverse effects in people, including as hallucinations, confusion, tiredness, and even convulsions.

3. Unripe potatoes

Because of their versatility and high nutritional value, potatoes are frequently included in diets that are considered to be well-balanced. The fact that many potato cultivars have toxic leaves, sprouts, and underground stems (called tubers) renders them unsuitable for this application. Glycoalkaloid is the name given to this poison. When potatoes are put in contact with this poison, they begin to oxidize, become green, and ultimately rot. Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids, which, if consumed in large numbers, can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mental confusion, migraines, and even death.

4. Raw Kidney Beans (Uncooked Kidney Beans)

Because of the abundance of nutritious components that they contain, kidney beans are an excellent choice for you to include in your diet. If you absolutely must handle them, especially in their unprocessed state, exercise the utmost caution. Raw red kidney beans are where you will find the highest concentration of lectins, which are a type of toxin that can cause stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This information was provided by Christine Mikstas on WebMD. These adverse effects are possible even after consuming a small amount of raw kidney beans, such as four or five.

5. the rhubarb plant’s leaves

The stalks of the rhubarb plant are safe to consume, however the leaves of the plant contain oxalic acid, which is a naturally occurring toxin that hinders the body from absorbing calcium. The symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation, and potentially coma and death, are all associated with bone growth that is irregular.

6. Poppy seeds

Although amygdalin, a chemical that can be broken down into cyanide, is found in both bitter and sweet almonds, it is believed that the concentration of amygdalin in bitter almonds is higher than in sweet almonds. Cyanide is a highly toxic substance. Consuming bitter almonds may cause gastrointestinal distress such as cramping, nausea, and diarrhea due to this reason; however, there are no documented adverse effects of consuming sweet almonds.

7. Unroasted cashew nuts

Cashews have an outstanding nutritional profile, even when compared to other types of nuts. Cashew nuts that have not been processed contain urushiol, a naturally occurring toxin that is mitigated by the manufacturing process but in sufficient quantities can be harmful. The urushiol toxin that can be found in poison ivy and poison oak has been known to cause deadly allergic reactions in some individuals.

8. The mycelia in question

Mushrooms are a food item that is rather high in nutritional value; nevertheless, they do require a certain amount of care. There are a few popular wild mushrooms that should be avoided at all costs, despite the fact that the majority of wild mushrooms can be consumed safely. Both the death cap (Amanita phalloides) and the destroying angel are good examples of this type of fungus (Amanita virosa). According to Healthline, there is at least one species of wild mushroom that has the potential to cause severe abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, liver failure, coma, and even death.

According to Christine Mikstas of WebMD, the skin, bark, and leaves of mangoes contain urushiol. This is a naturally occurring toxin that can also be found in poison ivy and raw cashews. In certain people, being exposed to the toxin can cause allergic reactions such as swelling, rashes, and even breathing difficulties.
