Pain on the left side of your chest can be alarming, and for good reason it’s often associated with heart-related issues. However, not all chest pain is caused by heart problems. Understanding the major causes can help you know when to seek medical attention and what might be going on inside your body.
The most serious and widely recognized cause is angina or a heart attack (myocardial infarction). This occurs when the blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked or reduced, often due to clogged arteries.
The pain typically feels like pressure, squeezing, or heaviness, and it might radiate to the left arm, jaw, or back. If you’re experiencing this along with sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath, it’s a medical emergency.
Other non-cardiac causes include muscle strain especially if you’ve recently lifted something heavy or made sudden movements. This pain tends to be sharp and worsens with movement or touch.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux can also cause burning chest pain on the left side, often confused with heart pain. Lung-related issues, such as pneumonia or pleurisy (inflammation of the lung lining), can also lead to localized chest pain.
While not all left-sided chest pain is life-threatening, it’s crucial not to ignore it especially if it comes suddenly or is severe.
