What Really Happens When You Eat Only Once A Day

Eating only once a day—also known as OMAD (One Meal A Day)—has gained popularity among some people for weight loss or lifestyle reasons. But while it might sound simple and effective, regularly eating just one meal a day can have both positive and negative effects on your body depending on how it’s done.

In the short term, OMAD can lead to calorie restriction, which may result in weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, and better mental clarity for some people. Intermittent fasting, including OMAD, has also been linked to reduced inflammation and cellular repair through a process called autophagy.

However, eating once a day also comes with significant downsides. Your body may not be getting enough nutrients, especially if that one meal isn’t well-balanced. Over time, you may feel more tired, dizzy, or even irritable due to low blood sugar. It can also negatively affect your metabolism, especially if your body starts to adapt to fewer calories by slowing it down.

Additionally, some people experience digestive problems like bloating or discomfort from consuming a large amount of food in one sitting. Others may struggle with intense hunger, leading to overeating or making unhealthy food choices when it’s finally time to eat.

OMAD isn’t ideal for everyone, especially those with medical conditions, active lifestyles, or high energy needs. If you’re considering it, talk to a healthcare provider or nutritionist to make sure you’re doing it safely.
