During these times, polygamy was culturally accepted, especially among wealthy or powerful men, and it was often used for political alliances, survival, or to produce many offspring.
However, the Bible doesn’t always portray these relationships positively. Many polygamous marriages in Scripture led to jealousy, family conflict, and spiritual challenges. For example, the rivalry between Leah and Rachel caused deep emotional pain, and Solomon’s many wives led him away from God (1 Kings 11:3-4).
In the New Testament, teachings shift toward monogamy. Jesus, in Matthew 19:4-6, refers to God’s original design in Genesis—that a man shall be joined to his wife (singular).
Also, church leaders were required to be “the husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2,12), reinforcing monogamy as the standard for Christian life.
While the Bible records polygamy, it does not endorse it as God’s ideal. God’s plan appears to honor one man and one woman in a committed, lifelong relationship.
