Why Hair and Nails Appear to Grow After Death

For years, people have shared a strange belief that a person’s hair and fingernails continue growing after death. While the idea may sound frightening, science offers a much simpler explanation.....Continue Reading Full Details Here.

When a person dies, the heart stops pumping blood and breathing ceases. The body’s cells are no longer supplied with the oxygen and nutrients required to maintain normal biological processes. Since hair and nail growth depends on living cells and active tissues, hair and nails do not actually continue growing after death.

So why do they sometimes appear longer?

The answer lies in what happens to the skin.

After death, the body gradually loses moisture. As the skin becomes dehydrated, it can shrink and pull back around areas such as the fingertips, toes and scalp.

This can make more of the nail or hair that was already present become visible, creating the illusion that it has continued growing.

For example, a fingernail may appear longer because the skin surrounding it has tightened and receded slightly. The nail itself has not produced new tissue.

A similar effect can occur with hair as changes in the skin make existing hair appear more prominent.

Therefore, the long-standing belief that hair and fingernails continue growing after death is largely the result of postmortem changes in the skin and body tissues, rather than continued biological growth.

So, the next time someone claims that a dead person’s hair or nails kept growing, there is no need to imagine anything mysterious. The body is simply undergoing natural physical changes after death, which can create an appearance that is easily misunderstood.
