Judaism and Christianity, while sharing roots in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), diverge significantly when it comes to the figure of Jesus. While Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God and the promised Messiah, Jews do not accept this view—and for deeply rooted theological and historical reasons.
One major reason is that Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies as outlined in Jewish scripture. According to Jewish belief, the true Messiah will bring about a time of universal peace, rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, gather all Jews back to the land of Israel, and establish God’s rule on Earth.
Since these events did not occur during Jesus’ time, Jews do not consider him the Messiah.
Secondly, Jews strongly emphasize God’s absolute oneness. The idea that God could take human form—as Christianity claims through Jesus—is seen as incompatible with Jewish monotheism. To Jews, God is indivisible and not a man, which is clearly emphasized in scriptures like Numbers 23:19: “God is not a man, that He should lie.”
Historically, Jews also faced persecution in the name of Jesus, which further deepened the divide. For centuries, forced conversions and discrimination made it difficult for Jewish communities to even consider the Christian perspective.
Lastly, Judaism relies more on the collective tradition and oral law, which never recognized Jesus as divine. For Jews, a person claiming divinity or being worshipped as a god is a break from the teachings passed down from Moses and the prophets.
So, while Jews respect Jesus as a historical figure or teacher, they do not believe he was divine or the awaited Messiah.
Their belief is grounded in their scripture, tradition, and the expectations of what the real Messiah must fulfill.
