During pregnancy, many women notice a dark vertical line running from the belly button down to the pubic area. This line is called the linea nigra, and it’s a completely natural occurrence. It usually appears around the second trimester and becomes more visible as pregnancy progresses.
The main reason for the appearance of the linea nigra is hormonal changes, particularly the increase in estrogen and melanocyte-stimulating hormone, which encourage more pigment production in the skin.
This causes the line, which is actually always present as the lighter linea alba, to darken. Women with darker skin tones often notice it more because of higher melanin levels, but it can appear in women of all skin colors.
Functionally, the linea nigra doesn’t directly impact the pregnancy or the baby’s health — it’s more of a visual change linked to the body’s preparation for childbirth. Some experts believe it could be nature’s way of guiding the newborn toward the breast for feeding, as babies are naturally drawn to contrasts in color.
The good news is, the linea nigra usually fades within a few months after delivery, once hormone levels return to normal. It’s simply one of the many fascinating signs of the body adapting to support new life.
