A diastema refers to a gap or space between two teeth, most often noticeable between the upper front teeth. This condition is not a disease or disorder—it’s simply a variation in dental alignment that can occur naturally.
Diastema can result from several factors such as a mismatch between the size of the jawbone and the teeth, an oversized labial frenum (the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums), or habits like thumb-sucking in childhood.
In most cases, a diastema doesn’t pose any health risk. However, for some people, large gaps can affect chewing efficiency, speech, or self-confidence.
