Heart Attack vs Cardiac Arrest: Key Differences Everyone Should Know

A heart attack happens when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked. This blockage is usually caused by a buildup of cholesterol or a blood clot in the coronary arteries. When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, it begins to get damaged. The person is often awake and may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or discomfort in the arms, neck, or back. Immediate medical attention is needed to prevent further heart damage.

On the other hand, cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. It is an electrical problem that causes the heart to malfunction, stopping blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. The person suddenly collapses, becomes unresponsive, and has no pulse or normal breathing. Without quick intervention, death can occur within minutes.

The major difference lies in how the two conditions affect the heart. A heart attack is a circulation problem, while cardiac arrest is an electrical failure. In some cases, a heart attack can trigger cardiac arrest, but they are distinct emergencies requiring different responses.

If someone is having a heart attack, call emergency services immediately and keep the person calm until help arrives. If a person suffers cardiac arrest, begin CPR right away and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if available. Quick action can mean the difference between life and death.

Experts recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of both conditions. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, and managing stress, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.

Knowing the signs and differences between a heart attack and cardiac arrest can empower you to act fast. Awareness, preparedness, and timely response can truly save lives.
