What Happens to Your Body When You Stop Having Sex? 4 Things to Know

Choosing to take a break from sex does not automatically mean something is wrong with your health. However, changes in sexual activity can affect people differently, and some commonly shared claims about abstinence are more complicated than they appear.....Continue Reading Full Details Here.

From erectile function and prostate health to blood pressure and the immune system, here are four things worth knowing about what may happen when you stop having sex.

1. Your Erectile Function May Be Affected — But Abstinence Does Not Automatically Cause Erectile Dysfunction

One common claim is that men who stop having sex will eventually be unable to get an erection. That is not supported by strong evidence.

Erectile dysfunction can have many causes, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain medications, hormonal problems, stress, anxiety, depression and lifestyle factors.

Sexual inactivity itself does not mean that a man will inevitably develop erectile dysfunction. In fact, occasional changes in erections are normal and can occur for many reasons.

However, maintaining sexual activity — whether through partnered sex or masturbation — can help some men remain familiar with sexual arousal and erection. Persistent difficulty getting or maintaining an erection should be discussed with a healthcare professional, particularly because it can sometimes be an early sign of an underlying health condition.

2. Does Having Less Sex Increase Your Risk of Prostate Cancer?

There has been considerable interest in the relationship between ejaculation and prostate health.

Some observational studies have found an association between more frequent ejaculation and a lower risk of prostate cancer. However, this does not prove that having less sex causes prostate cancer.

Sexual activity is only one of many factors that researchers have investigated in relation to prostate health. Age, family history, lifestyle and other health factors can also influence prostate cancer risk.

Therefore, it would be misleading to tell men that stopping sex will cause prostate cancer.

Men should instead focus on maintaining overall health and discussing appropriate prostate screening with their healthcare provider based on their age, risk factors and medical history.

3. Your Blood Pressure Could Be Influenced by Changes in Sexual Activity

Sexual activity can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure, much like other forms of physical activity. Some research has also found associations between sexual activity and cardiovascular health.

There is also a psychological component. Intimacy can help some people relax, reduce stress and improve mood. Because chronic stress can contribute to elevated blood pressure, activities that promote relaxation may indirectly support cardiovascular health.

However, it would be inaccurate to say that stopping sex will automatically cause your blood pressure to rise.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting excessive alcohol consumption, avoiding tobacco and managing stress remain much more established ways to support healthy blood pressure.

4. Your Immune System Is Not Simply Determined by How Often You Have Sex

Another popular claim is that having sex regularly strengthens the immune system.

Some research has found differences in immune markers, including immunoglobulin A (IgA), among people with different levels of sexual activity. IgA plays an important role in the body’s immune defenses.

However, these studies do not establish that having sex directly makes someone more resistant to illness. Immune function is influenced by a wide range of factors, including sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress, age and underlying health conditions.

Interestingly, some research has suggested that very frequent sexual activity does not necessarily produce greater immune benefits. This is another reason to be cautious about claims that there is a specific amount of sex everyone needs for a healthy immune system.

So, Is It Unhealthy to Stop Having Sex?

For most people, there is no medically established requirement to have sex a certain number of times per week to remain healthy.

People may choose to abstain from sex for personal, religious, relationship or health reasons, and abstinence itself is not considered a disease.

What matters more is overall physical and mental wellbeing. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, nutritious food, stress management and appropriate medical care have far stronger evidence behind them when it comes to maintaining good health.

If a person experiences a sudden change in sexual desire, persistent erectile problems, pain during sex, problems with ejaculation or other unexplained sexual symptoms, speaking with a healthcare professional is advisable.

The Bottom Line

Stopping sex does not automatically cause erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, high blood pressure or a weakened immune system. While sexual activity can be associated with certain physical and psychological benefits, many viral claims about what happens when people stop having sex exaggerate the available evidence.

Rather than focusing on a specific number of sexual encounters per week, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and paying attention to changes in your body are far more important for long-term health.
