Why Heart Attacks Strike Most Often in the Morning

It may surprise many people to learn that most heart attacks tend to happen in the morning, typically between 6 a.m. and 12 noon. This isn’t just a random pattern—it’s tied to how the human body naturally functions.

During the early hours, the body undergoes certain physiological changes that can trigger heart issues, especially in people with underlying cardiovascular problems.

One of the main reasons is that blood pressure tends to surge in the morning. As we wake up, our body gets ready for the day by releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

These hormones help us feel alert but also increase blood pressure and heart rate. The heart is put under sudden stress after several hours of rest, and in some people, this may cause a rupture in fatty plaques inside the arteries—leading to a heart attack.

Additionally, platelets (the cells that help blood clot) become stickier in the morning, increasing the risk of a blood clot forming and blocking an artery. Blood vessels are also a bit stiffer and narrower after hours of inactivity during sleep.

For people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, mornings can be a dangerous time. That’s why doctors sometimes recommend taking medications in the evening to help reduce early-morning risks.

Staying active, managing stress, eating heart-healthy foods, and getting regular checkups can greatly reduce this risk.
