Why Hair and Nails Appear to Grow After Death

For years, people have shared a strange belief that a person’s hair and fingernails continue growing after death. While the idea may sound frightening, science offers a much simpler explanation.

When a person dies, the heart stops pumping blood and breathing ceases. The body’s cells are no longer supplied with the oxygen and nutrients required to maintain normal biological processes. Since hair and nail growth depends on living cells and active tissues, hair and nails do not actually continue growing after death.

So why do they sometimes appear longer?
